Degenerativní choroby jsou charakterizovány progredujícím zánikem neuronů (buněk i axonů) různých oblastí nervového systému. Mohou postihovat mozkovou kůru, bazální ganglia, kmen, mozeček, míchu i periferní nervy. Slovo degenerace znamená pomalý kvantitativní úbytek funkce určité populace buněk, ale nespecifikuje vlastní biologický mechanizmus. Pokroky v molekulární genetice již objasnily molekulární mechanizmy některých degenerativních nemocí...
