Bolest hlavy je symptomem, jako každá jiná bolest. Podstatný význam pro další osud pacienta má určení správné diagnózy. Nejdříve bychom měli rozhodnout, zda se jedná o primární bolest hlavy, která nemocnému život znepříjemní, ale neohrozí jej, nebo o sekundární bolest hlavy, která by toto způsobit mohla. Jsou uvedeny varovné příznaky, signalizující nebezpečí a doporučená pomocná vyšetření.
