I přes četná preventivní opatření úrazů neubývá. Poranění mozku izolované nebo jako součást polytraumatu je již dlouho v ohnisku pozornosti vzhledem k tomu, že důsledky tohoto poranění mají zásadní důležitost pro integritu organizmu. V roce 2000 utrpělo u nás nitrolební poranění 35 598 nemocných a zemřelo 17,6 % z nich (7).
