Neurotransmise a řízení mužské sexuality

Normální iniciace a průběh sexuálního aktu je podmíněn také normálním průběhem mnoha reakcí a reflexů, od sexuální apetence přes schopnost dosažení a udržení kvalitní erekce až po schopnost dosažení orgazmu včetně schopnosti vypudit sperma. Všechny výše vyjmenované sexuální funkce jsou řízeny centrální nervovou soustavou. Zmíněné řízení je pochopitelně zajišťováno řadou neurotransmiterů jak v oblasti telencefala, tak i mozkového kmene a míchy. Kvalitní průběh sexuálního aktu totiž vyžaduje u mužského individua centrální integraci taktilních, čichových, sluchových a mentálních stimulu, a stimulu odpovídající odezvu. Všechny zmíněné senzorické funkce i jejich centrální integrace jsou zprostředkovány neurotransmitery. Zcela dominantní úlohu v centrálním řízení mužských sexuálních funkcí mají transmise dopaminergní a cholinergní. Jejich porucha u neurologických onemocnění rezultuje i v poruchu sexuálních funkcí.
