Každý rodič chce, aby se mu narodilo krásné a zdravé dítě. Také většina žen s epilepsií ve fertilním věku chce mít dítě, ale řada z nich se těhotenství obává. Rizika spojená s těhotenstvím epileptiček jsou často přeceňována a existuje řada nepravdivých předsudků. Epilepsie a léčba antiepileptiky nejsou kontraindikací těhotenství. Epileptické onemocnění, potenciální vliv antiepileptik na dítě a možný vliv těhotenství na epilepsii však přinášejí některá rizika a specifika, na která bych ráda upozornila a o kterých by měla být každá pacientka s epilepsií přiměřeně informována. Neurologové a gynekologové musí umět ženě s epilepsií jednak podat správné a validní informace, jednak o ni správně pečovat.
