V běžné praxi neurologických lůžkových pracovišť již dávno minula doba dlouhodobého observování nemocných a minimalistické terapie. Změnil se obsah oboru a jeho integrální součástí je velmi aktivní léčba akutních stavů centrálního i periferního nervového systému. Na počátku 90. let minulého století vznikaly první neurologické jednotky intenzivní péče a v současné době si lze jen těžko představit kvalitní neurologické oddělení bez JIPu nebo bez okamžité dostupnosti intenzivní péče na centrálních jednotkách. Neurointenzivní péče se pro mnohé z nás stala hlavní náplní činnosti.
