Již v rámci pregraduální výuky neurologické diagnostiky bývá medikům opakovaně zdůrazňována nutnost objektivního vyšetření všech nervových systémů. Nevyšetřením některého systému (například cerebella či systému senzitivního) se připravíme o informace, které se vzápětí mohou ukázat být rozhodujícími kamínky v sestavované pomyslné mozaice neurologické diagnózy. V případě nekompletního vyšetření tak existuje reálné riziko stanovení nepřesného či dokonce zcela chybného diagnostického závěru. Na druhé straně však velkou část více či méně erudovaných neurologů příliš netrápí skutečnost, že v rámci standardního neurologického vyšetření téměř zcela opomíjí vyšetření tzv. vyšší nervové činnosti. Mám na mysli především vyšetření systémů kognitivních a behaviorálních, tedy paměti, pozornosti, funkcí gnostických, nálady, atd. Jinými slovy málo pozornosti je obecně neurology věnováno vztahu mezi mozkem a chováním u konkrétního neurologického pacienta. Důvodem, proč se většina z nás připravuje o množství nenahraditelných informací, je jistě zčásti složitost kognitivních a behaviorálních systémů, zčásti neznalost možností jednoduchého vyšetření těchto systémů a částečně snad i nedostatek důvěry v přínos takového vyšetření...
