Aktuální problémy neurotoxicity rtuti

Hlavní problém neurotoxicity rtuti v současné době nepředstavuje expozice vysokým koncentracím rtuti, ale spíše dlouhodobá expozice nízkým koncentracím této látky z životního prostředí. K nejdůležitějším zdrojům této expozice patří (1) páry rtuti ze zubního amalgámu, (2) metylrtuť z ryb a (3) thiomersal z vakcín. Zvláštností této situace je, že všechna zmíněná tři užití mají svůj dobrý důvod a znamenají i zdravotní přínos. Jejich omezení by sice snížilo expozici rtuti, ale mohlo by být spojeno se zdravotními riziky závažnějšími než představuje potenciální riziko rtuti. Proto je potřeba uvážlivě vyvažovat poměr RIZIKA A PŘÍNOSU zamýšlených preventivních opatření.
