Biologický otec moderní neurologie Jean–Martin Charcot (1825–1893)

Jean-Martin Charcot (1825–1893) byl prvním profesorem neurologie na světě, ještě předtím se ale stal na Sorbonně profesorem patologie. Jako první zavedl vědecký přístup ke klinické diagnostice nervových onemocnění. Charcotovi je připisován popis roztroušené sklerózy mozkomíšní, amyotrofické laterální sklerózy a hereditární neuropatie, méně je však známa řada priorit, které popsal ve vnitřním lékařství. V závěru své medicínské kariéry se však věnoval především hysterii, kterou – v duchu doby – považoval na somatickou, nikoliv psychickou poruchu. Eponymních názvů Charcotových příznaků a nemocí je nespočet. Charcot si nepochybně zaslouží označení „otec moderní neurologie“.
